On my way to work every Tuesday and Thursday, I walk through the Duke Hospital. What does that have to do with Disney? Nothing at all, but I want you to imagine walking through a hospital for a second. Do you see the bleach white floors, can you feel the cold hands poking out of those starched white coats? Duke Hospital has wide, well lit walkways and amazing scenery, but it is still a hospital.
Anyways, every Tuesday and Thursday there is a hospital volunteer in front of the guest bathroom on the main concourse, playing classical music on a small, glossy violin. I don't know if she's on lunch break, I don't know if that's her volunteer service, and I don't care my friend.
What I care about is that today while I was walking past this angel she struck the first three notes of Ariel's "Part of Your World," and the world changed. Disgruntled old men exchanged smiles with strangers. Children stopped crying. The sterile tint of white coats turned into an ethereal gleam. I wish I could have taken a picture and sent it to Michael Eisner himself. This was no faith, trust, and pixie dust my friend. This was Disney magic. And I hope one day, when you're walking through a hospital, or a high school, or the grocery store that you find some of that magic too.
