In the wake of my enlistment into the Giroux army, I stumbled across this Tumblr post, a compilation of inspiring Disney quotes. I would like to take a break from my siege of the Disney Empire, to say thank you to Mr. Walt Disney. The creations, characters, and dreams that have been born out of your work have not all been sexist, racist, conservative propaganda.
The Walt Disney company has not only had a firm hand in shaping dreams, it has been a key force in shaping the children that will make those dreams come true. Yes, I did run around the house with a mop and a witch's hat after the first time I watched Fantasia. But, I also went out and bought my little sister a plastic bow and arrow after she watched Brave. If she decides to go to war to protect her family's honor, I will catch her a cricket. And if she would like to navigate the waters of the Pacific like Moana, I will build her a boat.
I love movies because I get to experience a different, exciting, sometimes imaginary, world. I love books because I meet hundreds of different characters on the page, and they stay with me always. We love Disney because these amazing characters are the ones we grew up with, we sing with them, fight with them, and sometimes cry with them (don't judge the waterworks). We grew up in this worlds, brightly colored and new. And when we started to dream, we grew up dreaming Disney. We were all once Mickey, orchestrating a team of mops, or Rapunzel stuck in her tower, and we are those who grew up believing anything is possible. And we are sure as hell going to make it happen.
